OpenAI Prism Is Shutting Down: Best LaTeX Editor Alternatives

Short answer: OpenAI says Prism will shut down on 1 January 2027, and all Prism data is deleted afterwards and can't be recovered, so export now (Settings → Data Controls → Export all projects). Project history, inline comments, collaborator permissions and the live Zotero link don't come with the export. For shared browser editing, Overleaf is the obvious move (its free plan allows 1 collaborator per project). For solo work, a local setup like VS Code with LaTeX Workshop, or OpenAI's suggested Codex route, works.

How do I export my Prism projects?

Settings → Data Controls → Export all projects (zip) → Download zip. Or export one project from its title menu with Export (zip).
Unzip and check that every .tex, .bib and figure file is there.

Overleaf figures come from Overleaf plans and plan limits. The free plan has a 10-second compile timeout and only 24 hours of history, and track changes needs a paid plan. Large theses may hit the timeout.

Local setup (VS Code + LaTeX Workshop)

On r/LaTeX, users moving off Prism suggested VS Code with LaTeX Workshop and an AI agent, synced to OneDrive or Google Drive (Reddit). OpenAI also notes that Most multi-file LaTeX projects also need a local TeX toolchain.

Codex

OpenAI’s own route is to open the exported folder in Codex and compile it locally. OpenAI is clear that Codex does not reproduce Prism’s shared real-time editor.

TODO: hands-on results. Export a sample multi-file Prism project, then import it into Overleaf (free) and a local VS Code setup. Record compile success, citation and figure fidelity, and time taken, with screenshots and the date.
